Even though Adam Holý is an expert in commercial photography, he falls under that general romanticised notion of the Godsent artist, i.e. allowed to access worlds forbidden to rational mortals. He embodies the old-school supernatural categories of intuition and God-given talent despite his sense of irony, he's not inclined to shake off these gifts. In any case, for Holý, photography possesses a necessary and intimate naturalness a sister most of the time, often a servant. Framed by two relationships with models in The Overview Effect, his work lives off lust, a fascination with classic beauty and pop, baroque contrasts and a vulnerability that can just as soon turn to hysteria. Enlightened by events from different photographic fields, yet always a product of his gut instinct, his work threatens to burst with an overripe abundance of detail and emotion. Holý stubbornly ignores the distance between private, art, magazine, fashion and erotic photography – this project for the Berlin art fair celebrates his work over the past ten years. Within the applied arts, he is also rightly acclaimed as a soulful photographer.
