The nature of his work is inseparable from his character. It is helpful and friendly, smartly simple or laconic, somewhat classical, yet open to current impulses, and thus fresh, generous, modest, seemingly easy or facile, yet responsible, detached, endowed with humor, discreet, yet sparkling with intelligence. Even though his work is embedded in local tradition, it has won awards and honorary doctorates all over the world.
Posters designed by Zdeněk Ziegler rank among the gems of Czech movie posters of the 1960s and 70s. His work in the field of exhibition design, corporate visual style, and stamps, which contributed to the modernization of the field, is also remarkable. He has enriched book typography with dozens of book designs, both individual publications and entire series, since the 1960s. He led the Studio of Graphic Design and Visual Communication at the AAAD in Prague from 1990, was the President of the AAAD from 2003 to 2006, and has led the Studio of Graphic Design at the Institute of Art and Design in Plzeň since 2006. Always surrounded with young people, Zdeněk Ziegler – born in the Hanspaulka quarter of Prague in 1932 – says he is “a happy man".
