Petr Nikl (*1960) was born to a family of an academic painter and a children's toy designer, which is perhaps the source behind his ultimate visual empathy. He has invented an utterly unique world which is, similar to a child's imagination, inhabited by a host of most peculiar creatures, sounds, colorful and fragile things and boundless dreams. He himself loves to indulge in amazement while sporting the characteristic expression in his face that of a little boy who touches everything around him as gently as he can; an explorer who seeks the range of options of existence and dances and sings and puts on fantasy costumes. His paintings, songs, books and plays are adored by audience of all ages. The book Monkeys' Allegories, which earned Nikl a nomination for the Czech Grand Design award for Illustrator of the Year 2017, is an adventurous, visual and totally wordless atlas. The drawings of monkeys are executed in ordinary pencil, and their poses while lying or sitting, as well as their limbs and tails, make for a secret alphabet. Try to learn it for you will thus also learn the language of the animal kingdom.
