Žofia has recently graduated from the studio of Type Design and Typography at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague where she finished her studies last year with a book and research project focusing on embroidery sampler books. She has found a fresh approach to the traditional medium of embroidery and, apart from researching the historical context of sample books and the typography they use, she also approaches embroidery through the prism of feminist theory and alternative historiographies. The resulting work is multi-layered and connects aspects of theoretical inquiry with diverse motifs, detailed alphabets, as well as topical images, objects and interviews. And Žofia also created her own type for the project.
Over the past years, Žofia has drawn attention to herself with her long-term collaborative project for the Kafkárna Centre for Arts and Ecology UMPRUM, where she also worked on the acclaimed book Dům a zahrada (House and Garden). It is a multilayered work, both in content and form.
The subtitle “A Messy Research” describes Žofia’s approach very well. Despite searching for the internal structures and system which defines the project, she is also not afraid to get her hands dirty and does not shy away from imperfections. Quite the contrary – imperfection becomes the lifeblood of her work. Žofia draws, prints, typesets, plays, experiments, combines, weaves together and layers her materials. Her posters, books and other graphic works are, first and foremost, living organisms that pulsate and breathe.
