Františka Benčaťová’s project entitled Basket-like, basket-what, basket-why... works with Jacquard fabrics and was conceived as a graduate work for the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague while the artist was on study trips in the Belgian city of Ghent and the Dutch Tilburg. Her work engages in playful irony and offers a technological experiment exploring the limits of Jacquard weaving. It draws attention to soft shades, details and the finer aspects of textile media, the diversity of possible views on a simple object whose complexity can be accessed through multi-modal perspectives and which rejects cheap synthesis. The project uncovers the complexity of everyday things surrounding us and provides space for valuing and appreciating them. Františka Benčaťová received the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design Rector’s Prize, and the 2023 award for Excellent Student Design awarded by the Design Cabinet.
