Although Jakub Straka drew much attention even while still a very talented student of graphic design at the prestigious Gerrit Rietveld Academie, it’s just a few years ago that he started fully concentrating on the medium of photography. His work for the international scene always made him stand out in the local context and he successfully transposed his characteristic search for new approaches and his ability to react to various commissioned projects to photographing fashion. Since then, fashion photography has become his main field. This is clear also from the projects which earned him the nomination for CGD’s Photographer of the Year 2023 award, including the campaign for the Jarda Praha Season 4 fashion brand’s lookbook. This photo shoot took place before the new collection’s actual fashion show at Prague’s Výstaviště and the models became the participants of an imaginary music concert – the lookbook shows “the audience’s arrival at the concert” and the campaign riffs on “the live show.” Straka uses a strong flash, over-exposing part of the image. He lights up a fictitious young crowd of nu-metal fans, a music movement started in the mid-1990 whose popularity lasted into the new millennium and inspired this fashion collection.
